Abstract
The Senior Employment and Social Activities Program is considered to have a significant role as it contributes to the alleviation of poverty and to successful aging by providing additional income to the elderly and opportunities for social participation. The aim of this qualitative case study was to understand the experiences of senior women participating in the Program and explore the significance of participating in it. To this end, we conducted in-depth interviews with seven female senior citizens who had participated in the Program for at least two years and conducted within- and between-case analyses. Comparative case-to-case analysis revealed six main themes emerging from the participation experience: the multi-dimensional needs of senior life that led to participation; health as a prerequisite for sustainable participation; the contradictory effects of participation; gendered work and female senior citizens; changes in the Program activities after COVID-19; and self-realization and infusion of energy during old age. The findings of this study emphasized the need to expand the Senior Employment and Social Activities Program to more senior citizens as it can facilitate successful aging and prevent them from economic and social exclusion.
